Economic woes for the sports business in Baltimore

The Baltimore Sun had a front page article this morning devoted to the impact of the general economic decline on the fortunes of the Orioles and the Ravens. There is also a bit of discussion about the prospects for the proposed downtown arena project. Here's one tidbit from the article: "It's kind of like booze and movies," said John Moag, founder of Moag & Co., a Baltimore-based investment banking firm that specializes in sports. Leagues: Not as easy as they look

The Women's Professional Soccer (WPS), the 5-team American league that just finished out its 3rd season, cancelled its 2012 season today while holding out hope for a return in 2013 or beyond. The WPS represents the second women's soccer league to fail in the United states in the past decade, following the demise of WUSA in 2003. WPS's announcement follows one day after CONCACAF finished up its women's soccer Olympic qualifying tournament in Vancouver, BC that attracted record crowds that exceeded 25,000 fans for the U.S.-Canada final. Other international women's soccer matches have also demonstrated an impressively broad level of popularity. Last summer's Women's World Cup final, […]

MLB's new killer app

Baseball has always been different than the other professional sports because local TV revenues are so large. They're large because they can provide a great deal of content to broadcasters -- 162 games in MLB versus 16 professional football games. But now we learn that one broadcasting stream that has equal revenue distribution in baseball is internet broadcasting. The most successful, and most valuable, franchise in baseball in the last few years isn't the New York Yankees or their rivals, the Boston Red Sox. It's Major League Baseball Advanced Media, which is worth more than those two deep pocket teams […]

This story from the Dallas Morning News has some good details on the public/private contributions to paying off the bonds which support the $1.2 billion Cowboys Stadium.  Both public and private revenues are exceeding projections.
